Bushy Park

London Central High School was established in 1951 till 1962 at Bushy Park (adjoining Hampton Court Palace), London, England.

Got some neat stuff here from Cliff Williams, the British historian that did such an incredible job for us at the vintage August London 2000 reunion.

From Cliff Williams:

Suggest you try a visual comparison exercise.  Try to fit the buildings in the small map into light green turf patches in the photo.  Spaces between and around buildings are darker green.  You may suddenly "see" the camp (as it was) on today's turf.

A major clue in the photo: look for one straight line of seven or eight Poplar trees (& shadows), roughly parallel with the street wall, which still marks the "front" of the former C building.  From the centre of this building a pathway ran diagonally right - across the "front lawn" (dark green patch) to the camp's main gate.  Buildings A and B were respectively west (L) and east (R) of the front lawn.

"Please be sure to identify B as LCHS's main school building,
although the the other buildings (A,C & D) were also part of the
larger Bushy Park U.S.A.F.Base at the time.

A, it seems (a surprise to me), was an RAF base, which had an very good NCO's snack bar.  Students from London Central were not supposed to use it, but did.

Hope this helps your interpretation.

I would very much appreciate it if you could find time to write a personal paragraph about a building or place in one of those two locations of which you have a particular memory and say why.  This would be to use as an anecdotal memory.  Please feel free to e-mail me with any additional information that could be used in a book or supplied to the Bushey Museum or the Royal Parks Office at Bushy Park.

Many thanks for your help.  I look forward to meeting you and your classmates again when you return to England.

Yours Sincerely,

John Clifford Williams

I met with Bob Murphy Sunday as I told you we might.  He didn't get to Bushey Park as he left in his freshman year (December 1960) at Heyford.  The picture is a composite of our Jr. High graduation (cutouts of the class picture) and the picture my wife took of the two of us.  Picture was taken at our personal 40.5 year reunion, Dec 10, 2000, 3:30 p.m., in Queesnbury, NY about halfway between our homes.  Doyle (AKA Frosty) Frost
